Most villa car parking shades in Muscat use one of two coverings stretched over a steel frame: PVC-coated polyester fabric or HDPE shade net. Both keep the sun off the car. They behave differently in dust, wind and rain, and that is what usually decides it.
PVC-coated fabric
PVC-coated fabric is a closed membrane. Nothing passes through it.
- Shade: full cover. The car underneath gets no direct sun at all.
- Dust and rain: it keeps dust, bird droppings and the occasional shower off the car.
- Heat: because air cannot pass through, heat can build up underneath on still days. Leaving the sides open and the shade high enough helps it clear.
- Wind: a closed fabric catches wind, so the frame, fixings and tension matter more.
- Upkeep: wash it down from time to time; a light colour shows dust sooner but reflects more sun.
HDPE shade net
HDPE shade net is a knitted fabric with small gaps in the weave.
- Shade: it blocks most of the sun but lets some light through.
- Dust and rain: fine dust and rain will pass through.
- Heat: air moves through the net, so it stays cooler underneath on still days.
- Wind: wind passes through the weave, which puts less load on the frame.
- Upkeep: easy — it sheds most of the dust in the wind.
Which one?
| If you want… | Usually choose |
|---|---|
| The car kept clean as well as shaded | PVC-coated fabric |
| Airflow and a lighter frame | HDPE shade net |
| A shade fixed to a boundary wall in an exposed spot | HDPE shade net, or fabric with a stronger frame |
The frame matters as much as the covering. Steel sections, column positions and how the shade is fixed to your wall should suit the span and the wind on your plot.
